Wild Turkey Private Selection Distiller's Select 2026

One of my favorite parts of visiting Kentucky bourbon country is discovering bottles that never make it to the shelves back home. During a recent stop at the Wild Turkey Distillery gift shop in Lawrenceburg, Kentucky, I found a bottle that immediately demanded attention: a Wild Turkey Private Selection Distiller's Select. It's one of those purchases that reminds you why distillery gift shops are worth exploring.

A Legacy Built Along the Kentucky River
Wild Turkey's story stretches back to the late 1800s, when the Ripy family began distilling whiskey near Lawrenceburg. The brand received its now-famous name in 1940 after company executive Thomas McCarthy brought bourbon on a wild turkey hunting trip. His friends enjoyed it so much they later asked for more of that "Wild Turkey" bourbon, and a legendary name was born.
Today, Wild Turkey remains one of Kentucky's most respected and recognizable distilleries. Through decades of changing ownership and industry cycles, the brand has maintained an unwavering commitment to producing bold, flavorful bourbon that never chases trends. Much of that consistency can be credited to the Russell family.
Jimmy and Eddie Russell: The First Family of Wild Turkey
Few names carry more weight in bourbon than Jimmy Russell and Eddie Russell. Jimmy joined Wild Turkey in 1954 and became one of the most influential figures in bourbon history. His dedication to traditional production methods helped shape Wild Turkey into the brand we know today. His son, Eddie, followed him into the family business and eventually became Master Distiller in 2015.
Together, the Russells represent more than a century of bourbon-making experience. Whether you're sipping Wild Turkey 101, Russell's Reserve, Rare Breed, Kentucky Spirit, or a private barrel selection like this one, their fingerprints are all over the whiskey.
For bourbon enthusiasts, it's hard to imagine a more picturesque setting. Standing on the bluff overlooking the river while surrounded by aging warehouses gives visitors an appreciation for how much location and time contribute to what's in the glass.
The Tasting
The bottle shares a wealth of information about this bourbon. The original spirit was distilled on 11/28/2017, utilizing the standard Wild Turkey mash bill of 75% corn, 13% rye, and 12% malted barley. It was placed into barrel 26-0243, and aged at the Tyrone campus in Warehouse E on the 4th floor. It was bottled on 4/30/2026, for an age of 8+ years, and bottled at 101 proof.
The Tyrone Campus is the home to Wild Turkey’s distilling operations. Today, 23 rickhouses are spread across the property, each providing slightly different aging environments that influence the character of the whiskey.
Eye: Amber.
Nose: Classic Wild Turkey aromas immediately jump from the glass. Vanilla and caramel lead the way, followed by notes of brown sugar, baking spices, and toasted oak. It's warm, inviting, and unmistakably Wild Turkey.
Palate: This is where the bourbon really shines. The mouthfeel is thick, creamy, and wonderfully balanced. Sweet vanilla arrives first, followed by oak char and a wave of Christmas spice. The sweetness is substantial without ever becoming heavy because the rye spice shows up at exactly the right moment to keep everything in balance.
One note that kept coming back to me was a distinctive ginger-ale-like character. There's a sweet, crisp spice quality that gives the bourbon energy and brightness while still delivering the richness you'd expect from a well-aged Wild Turkey single barrel. It's flavorful, approachable, and remarkably easy to revisit.
Finish: Long and lingering with waves of vanilla, oak char, and baking spice that slowly fade while leaving just enough warmth to encourage another sip.
Overall: This is a very good bourbon and exactly the kind of bottle I hope to find when visiting a distillery. Private selections can sometimes feel like curiosities rather than upgrades. Barrel 26-0243 avoids that trap entirely. It delivers everything I enjoy about the Wild Turkey profile while showcasing the individuality that makes single barrels so much fun.
I picked this up at the Wild Turkey gift shop for $69 and would buy it again in a heartbeat.
If you happen to come across one of the Distiller's Select barrels, it's worth serious consideration.
And if you can't find one, Wild Turkey Kentucky Spirit, another excellent single-barrel offering, remains a worthy substitute and captures much of the same DNA. Whether it's Wild Turkey 101, Rare Breed, Russell's Reserve, Kentucky Spirit, or a private selection such as this one, the common thread is authenticity. The Russells have never tried to reinvent bourbon. They've simply spent decades perfecting it.
Sometimes the best bottle from a Kentucky trip isn't the allocated release everyone is chasing. Sometimes it's a distillery-only single barrel sitting quietly on the gift shop shelf, waiting to surprise you. This Wild Turkey Private Selection Distiller's Select did exactly that, and I'm glad I brought it home.
