How to Spring-Clean Your Home Bar

Ah, spring. That magical time of year when the sun comes back, the birds start singing, and we all pretend we’re excited to clean things.

But while everyone else is out here alphabetizing spice racks and wrestling with their garage clutter, we tackle something much more important: the spring cleaning of the home bar.

Don’t worry — this isn’t the kind of cleaning that requires rubber gloves or existential dread. Think of it more like a seasonal tune-up for better cocktails, fresher flavors, and a bar that won’t judge you when friends stop by.

Let’s get into it.

Rotate Your Winter Bourbons to the Back (tell them it’s not personal)

Winter bourbons are like big, cozy sweaters: warm, heavy, and perfect when it’s cold. But once the weather turns, it’s time to move those barrel-proof beasts and molasses-rich bruisers a little further back on the shelf.

They served you well. They kept you toasty. They deserve a break.

Spring is the season for:

  • Brighter, fruit-forward profiles

  • Lower proof options

  • Easy-sippers you can enjoy without spontaneously needing a nap

Don’t worry — those winter favorites will return in all their glory next November. And they’ll act like they never left.

Introduce Some Fresh Spring Ingredients

If your cocktail ingredients currently include:

  • A sad lemon that looks like it’s been through emotional turmoil

  • Mint that died in the fridge weeks ago

  • A bottle of simple syrup you “made during the pandemic”

…it’s time for an upgrade.

Spring cocktails thrive on:

  • Fresh citrus (lemons, limes, grapefruit — your choice)

  • Fresh herbs (mint, basil, thyme…basically your backyard, but useful)

  • Lighter mixers (ginger beer, soda, spring teas, honey syrup)

This is the season of the bourbon smash, the mint julep, and anything involving fruit that doesn’t come from a can.

Throw out anything expired, questionable, or growing its own ecosystem. Your cocktails will taste better. Your guests will thank you. Your fridge will breathe a sigh of relief.

Give Your Bottles a Better Home (before they sunbathe to death)

If your bourbon bottles are currently sitting in:

  • Direct sunlight

  • On top of a warm fridge

  • Next to a heat vent

  • In a place your dog’s tail can knock them over

…congratulations, you’re slowly aging them in all the wrong ways.

Spring sunlight creeps across the house like a slow-moving laser beam, and bourbon does not appreciate the attention. Heat and UV light can mess with the flavor and even the proof.

So:

  • Move bottles away from windows

  • Keep them upright (cork integrity matters!)

  • Avoid hot spots

  • Give them room to breathe — you wouldn’t cram Derby hats in a shoebox, don’t cram bourbons into a pantry corner

A well-stored bottle is a happy bottle. And happy bottles make better drinks.

Do a Quick Inventory (and rediscover bottles you forgot existed)

There’s always that one bottle you bought “for a special occasion” that’s been sitting unopened for 18 months.

Well… guess what?

Spring is a special occasion.

Take stock:

  • What needs to get used up?

  • What deserves a comeback?

  • What should become a cocktail workhorse?

  • Which bottles make you say, “Ah yes, I did buy that on vacation…”?

Think of it like a friendly check-in with your collection. No judgment — just opportunities.

Build Your Spring Bar Lineup

Spring bourbon season is all about:

  • Approachable proofs

  • Floral, fruity, or dessert-light profiles

  • Bourbons that mix well but also sip great neat on mild evenings

Pick 4–6 bottles that can carry you through Derby season, porch season, and “I should really open the windows more often” season.

Then proudly display them like the seasonal art installation they are.

What’s in Your Spring Bar Lineup?

Now the fun part: I want to know what you're reaching for this spring.

Are you swapping in lighter bourbons? Going cocktail-heavy? Finally opening that bottle you’ve been saving since 2019?

Tell me in the comments — I’m collecting data for an extremely serious scientific study.(Okay, it’s just curiosity… but still.)

Cheers to spring, sunshine, and a cleaner, happier home bar.
