Old Forester Barrel-Strength Hy-Vee BloNo Pick

Some bourbons walk into the room and politely introduce themselves. Others kick the door open, crank up the volume, and announce their presence from across the county.
This Hy-Vee Bloomington-Normal Old Forester Barrel Strength selection falls somewhere in between. With a high proof, it certainly has the credentials to be a bruiser, but surprisingly, it arrives with far more finesse than force. That doesn't mean it's tame. It just means it's smart enough to wait until you're comfortable before reminding you exactly how much proof is in the glass.

A Little Old Forester History
Before we dive into the tasting, it's worth remembering that Old Forester occupies a special place in bourbon history. Founded by George Garvin Brown in 1870, Old Forester was the first bourbon sold exclusively in sealed glass bottles. At a time when whiskey quality could be, let's say, "adventurous," Brown sought to guarantee consistency and authenticity.
More than 150 years later, Old Forester remains one of Brown-Forman's flagship brands and one of only a handful of bourbon labels continuously sold before, during, and after Prohibition. In a world where bourbon brands come and go, Old Forester has been quietly doing its thing for generations.
And occasionally, they release barrel-strength single barrels that make bourbon geeks smile like they just found an extra Christmas present behind the tree.
The Tasting
Our bottle carries the distinctive deep teal-blue blue label that is embellished in white and gold lettering. While there is no age statement, the label does share that it was picked from Warehouse I, Floor 7, and was bottled at barrel strength – 130.2 proof. The Old Forester mash bill is 72% corn, 18% rye, and 10% malted barley. And if you think Old Forester is similar to Woodford Reserve, you’d be right, as both carry the same mash bill, but slightly different yeast strains, along with aging durations and warehouse locations.
Eye: Deep caramel in color with thin, lacey legs clinging to my Glencairn. It's rich, inviting, and hints at the concentration waiting beneath the surface.
Nose: Classic Old Forester from the very first inhale. Caramel, brown sugar, vanilla, and toasted oak come charging out of the glass. Everything is amplified by the barrel-strength proof, but somehow remains balanced and approachable. Most importantly, despite the 130.2 proof, you can still retain all of your nose hairs after a deep sniff. That's always a positive.
Palate: The familiar Old Forester profile carries right onto the palate. Caramel, brown sugar, vanilla, and oak lead the way before a rush of baking spice and charred oak arrives like a freight train running slightly behind schedule. The proof doesn't immediately punch you in the face. Instead, it sneaks around to the back palate and gradually makes its presence known. That's what makes this barrel so dangerous—in the best possible way.
For a bourbon north of 130 proof, the mouthfeel is surprisingly silky and smooth. Rich, coating, and wonderfully textured, it drinks well below its stated proof... at least for a moment.
Finish: The finish picks up right where the palate leaves off. Vanilla and charred oak linger alongside a long, warming spice note that seems determined to stick around for the entire conversation. The Kentucky hug arrives slowly and comfortably, spreading from chest to soul in the kind of way bourbon lovers appreciate on a cool evening. Long. Warm. Satisfying.
Overall: This bourbon is exactly what you hope to find in a barrel-strength pour. If standard Old Forester is the regular gym membership, this barrel pick is Old Forester on steroids.
Every classic Old Forester note is turned up several notches. The sweetness is richer. The oak is deeper. The spice is bigger. Yet somehow, it maintains balance and drinkability. The proof doesn't dominate the experience as much as it waits patiently before reminding you who's in charge.
And that's what I enjoyed most about this barrel. It's powerful without being obnoxious. Bold without becoming one-dimensional. Dangerously drinkable for 130.2 proof.
Hy-Vee Bloomington-Normal, you did a great pick here. A bold, concentrated expression of everything Old Forester fans already love—just with the volume turned way up.
