New Riff 8-Year Bourbon

I've always appreciated New Riff for one simple reason: they don't seem interested in shortcuts. Since launching in 2014, they've built a reputation for transparency, Bottled-in-Bond whiskey, and a commitment to quality over hype. While some distilleries rush young bourbon to market, New Riff has quietly waited for its whiskey to mature. Their new 8-Year Bourbon feels like the reward for that patience, offering a well-aged, high-rye bourbon that showcases everything fans have come to expect from this Northern Kentucky distillery.

A Brief History

There’s something refreshing about a distillery that refuses to rush the process.

Since opening its doors in 2014, New Riff Distilling in Newport, Kentucky has built a reputation on doing things the right way, not the fast way.

Founded by liquor retailer Ken Lewis, New Riff entered a bourbon landscape crowded with sourced whiskey and young craft spirits. Instead of chasing trends, they embraced a philosophy rooted in transparency, quality, and tradition, becoming well known for their commitment to Bottled-in-Bond whiskey and patiently waiting until their whiskey was ready before releasing it.

I've reviewed several New Riff expressions over the years, including their excellent Single Barrel, Bottled-in-Bond, and Maltster releases. One common thread has tied many of those products together: quality, consistency, and an appreciation for traditional Northern Kentucky high-rye bourbon. Their latest 8-year-old bourbon continues that tradition.

The Tasting

This release carries New Riff's familiar mash bill of 65% corn, 30% rye, and 5% malted barley, a recipe that proudly reflects the high-rye whiskey heritage of Northern Kentucky.

Bottled at 100 proof and presented without an age statement hidden in the fine print, the bold "8 Years Old" on the label makes a statement all by itself. In an era when many craft distilleries are still relying on youthful whiskey, an eight-year-old bourbon from a distillery founded just over a decade ago represents both patience and confidence.

While this expression checks many of the Bottled-in-Bond boxes, including the 100-proof bottling strength and lengthy maturation period, it does not qualify as Bottled-in-Bond because it blends bourbons from two distilling seasons rather than a single distillation season as required by the Bottled-in-Bond Act.

New Riff has one of the more recognizable bottle designs in modern bourbon. The tall bottle combines black glass with clear panels and copper-colored lettering, creating a sleek and contemporary look while still feeling distinctly Kentucky. The packaging communicates exactly what New Riff has always tried to communicate: traditional whiskey with a modern

edge.

Like many of New Riff's best releases, this bourbon is bottled using non-chill filtration.

Many distillers chill whiskey before filtration, removing certain fatty acids, proteins, and esters that can create cloudiness when bourbon is cooled. The result is a crystal-clear product on the shelf.

Non-chill filtration takes a different approach. By leaving many of those compounds intact, the whiskey often retains more texture and character. The tradeoff is that the bourbon may become slightly cloudy when chilled, but many enthusiasts gladly accept that in exchange for a richer mouthfeel and enhanced flavor. In my experience, New Riff's commitment to non-chill filtration has consistently been a positive one.

Eye: Dark amber with lacey, wispy legs that slowly work their way down the glass.

Nose: Vanilla immediately greets the senses, followed by baking spice, oak char, and dark stone fruits. It's an inviting aroma that strikes a nice balance between sweetness and maturity.

Palate: Vanilla and spice arrive first before transitioning into layers of dark fruits and oak char. The non-chill filtration really shines here, creating a lovely, savory mouthfeel that coats the palate without becoming overly heavy.

Finish: Long and spicy with a dry oak char character that lingers pleasantly.

Overall: This bourbon is very well-balanced and incredibly savory. The eight years in the barrel have added maturity and depth without overwhelming the underlying character of New Riff's high-rye mash bill. The rye spice remains vibrant, while the oak and dark fruit notes contribute complexity and structure. The non-chill filtration adds another dimension, creating a texture that feels natural and full-bodied.

More than anything, this bourbon reminds me why I've become such a fan of New Riff over the years. They consistently produce quality whiskey, remain committed to transparency, and have shown remarkable patience as their stocks have matured. Rather than rushing whiskey to market, they've allowed time to do its work.

The result is a bourbon that feels authentic to both the distillery and the Northern Kentucky tradition that inspired it. For fans of high-rye bourbon, non-chill filtered whiskey, or simply well-aged Kentucky bourbon, New Riff 8-Year is another strong reminder that patience often produces the best pours.
